The South Metro/Grant Hill Branch is located and operated by Center for Employment Training in partnership with the San Diego Workforce and the South Metro Career Center, and currently serves approximately 250 students - 34% women; 66% men. Successful graduates of CET have received average annual starting salary of $18,527, with some as high as $19,248.
To accommodate the large Hispanic population, all CET's courses are taught in both English and Spanish.
The San Diego CET office offers training programs for a variety of skills including
• Building Maintenance
• Electronic Assembly
• Welding Fabrication
Classes are Monday thru Friday from 8:00 to 3:00 p.m. Building Maintenance and Welding Fabrication classes are also offered from 4:00 to 8:30 p.m. Located at the 33rd block of Market St. use Public Transportation: Bus # 5 & 16
ESL classes and GED preparation are also part of the CET San Diego center's services.
The San Diego center's Director, Dora Mendivil has been with CET for the past ten years. She began her career in the Yuma, Arizona office, but made her way out to California and became part of the Riverside County CET office in 1997. Three years ago, Dora joined the San Diego CET office as the Director and has helped it grow into the successful program it is today.
CET Students train 5 days a week, 7 hours day, at their own pace, attending skills and job training until they pass competency levels of a minimum 70% in a given skill. They are trained by instructors who have extensive private sector industry experience, whereby they provide instruction and work-place simulated supervision, to best prepare students for long-term job placement. Instructors work in teams to provide a contextual learning environment for each student.
CET, a non-profit 501(c)(3), has received funding support from two primary sources: over 50% from local, state, and federal government and the remainder from the private sector.
