ESL Services

With the support of volunteers, ICP offers ESL services that not only improve one’s English language skills, but also foster civic participation, leadership development and citizenship preparation. To complement our legal and non-legal immigration and citizenship services, we offer the following adult education courses:

Citizenship Classes: Prepare for the naturalization interview

In ICP’s Citizenship Class, students learn and practice the basic elements of the US naturalization exam. Course topics include: US history and government based on USCIS’s "100 questions"; English reading, writing, and vocabulary, based on USCIS's standard reading and writing vocabulary lists; and practice answering questions common to USCIS interviews. Before finishing the course, all students are given a "mock interview" and additional time to prepare through individual tutoring. Students who have successfully completed their citizenship interviews are invited to share their experiences with the class, and many return as tutors to help other students with their interview preparation

Classes are held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings - 6:00-8:00 p.m.

ESL – Financial Literacy: to build a better understanding of the U.S. financial system.

In partnership with Opportunity Fund, ICP offers a financial literacy English class as part of the "Saving for Citizenship Program." Students learn about banking, budgeting, credit, investing, loans, and home mortgages, as well as other financial risks and benefits. Upon completion, Opportunity Fund opens an account for the individual and matches the client two dollars for every dollar that the client saves (up to $675.00). These funds are used toward the naturalization application fee.

ESL – Civics

ICP’s ESL classes are taught by a team of volunteer instructors, most of whom have been teaching with ICP for over a year. ESL Civics is offered in three levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced). The ESL curriculum is based on Pearson Education’s “Foundations” and “Expressways” series which focus on improving students’ conversational ability and pronunciation through practice of everyday language functions.
