Trainees will master job related tasks in the following competency
areas:
Introduction to Retail Services: Understand basic
operation of a retail business, including organizational structure,
personnel functions and the importance of providing quality customer
services.
Retail Math and Currency Recognition: Solve math
problems typical of the retail environment; identify foreign currency;
use exchange rates.
Cashiering: Operate several types of cash registers;
reconcile transactions; follow proper vault procedures.
Customer Relations: Demonstrate proper customer
relations and demonstrate how to handle a variety of typical customer
service situations.
Product Line Recognition: Identify typical products
by name, description, and code; explain basic operating procedures
and product limitations; identify related products.
Merchandising, Displays, and Stocking: Perform
standard functions required for merchandising, displaying and stocking
items.
Inventory Control: Demonstrate understanding of
basic principles and techniques of inventory control.
Shipping and Receiving Operations: Demonstrate
proper procedures for receiving incoming shipments and shipping
merchandise to other locations.
Forklift Operation and Certification: Identify
parts and operating procedures for various forklift models; Safely
operate a forklift to move and place stock; complete a forklift
certification test.
Store Security and Safety: Demonstrate understanding
of proper store security and safety principles and practices.
Basic Education and Worksite Literacy: Demonstrate
the oral, listening, reading, writing, and math skills needed to
find and keep a job in the retail specialist field.
Average Course Length: 630 hours (18 weeks)
Occupational Titles: Salesperson, Retail, Stock Clerk, Sales Floor,
Cashier, Sales & Related Worker, Shipping & Receiving Clerk.
