Johnny Rodriguez, CET Recruiter, and Jose Valle of Pioneers Health Centers coordinated this important event. "It grows each time we host it" said Andrew Rivera, Retail Instructor. The Retail class at CET hosts the event in its warehouse and patio. The agencies in attendance were: Pioneers Health Center, Calexico Health Center, Imperial Valley Blood Service of San Diego Blood Bank, SURE Helpline Center, Center for Family Solutions, El Centro Regional Medical Center-Health on Wheels, Imperial Valley Health Department. Dr. Jose Penilla, DDS, Think First Imperial Valley - Spinal Cord Injury information, March of Dimes, Clinicas de Salud de Pueblo, Diabetic Education Center. The Cyber Café, a local restaurant, provided food and drinks for all in attendance.

Over 240 students participated. "The event was a great success" said Jose Valle. Eighty-eight people were enrolled into the Family Pack, a reproductive Health Care program. Fifty two Hepatitis B Vaccines were given; 11 Breast Exams were performed; 36 Chlamydia and Gonorrhea tests were given. In addition, twenty-eight confidential HIV tests were performed; and, one hundred dental checks were given. Also, over 10 units of blood were donated. Many more signed up to donate but were not eligible. Most participants received a diabetes exam. Johnny Rodriguez said "The outcomes were very impressive and we will continue to do this every year."

"EL Centro CET understands the importance of providing health information to its students," stated CET staff member, Elvira Anaya. "The fact that we can bring some of the services directly to the students is a great opportunity. Many of these students would not otherwise have access to these services if it were not for the Health fair."

Congressman Bob Filner visited the CET El Centro CET

Congressman Bob Filner visited the El Centro CET. He toured the classrooms, observing students in training.

In 1992, Bob Filner was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the 51st Congressional District, one of the most diverse areas in the nation. This district, which is home to CET El Centro, encompassing the southern half of the City of El Centro, the South Bay cities of Chula Vista and National City, and all of Imperial County, the district's population is 55% Latino, 18% Anglo, 15% Filipino and 12% African-American.

Congressman Filner has continued to demonstrate that the confidence of this diverse community is well-deserved.

The following is an excerpt from a November 3, 2003 Press Release:

Congressman Bob Filner has received a score of 94% on the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda's (NHLA) Annual Congressional Scorecard. His score was the highest score of any California member of congress. The NHLA is a non- partisan coalition of the most influential Latino organizations in the country.

"I am very proud to be recognized by the NHLA for serving Hispanic Americans in the United States Congress," said Congressman Filner. "Latinos' needs are American needs, and Democrats in Congress are committed to supporting efforts and initiatives that improve the lives of Hispanic families. If Republicans were truly committed to helping the Latino community, they would focus their attention on helping American working families instead of taking photo-ops to promote a wrongheaded economic agenda." The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda is a non-partisan coalition of national public policy and civil rights organizations dedicated to providing the Hispanic community with a stronger voice in the nation's affairs. The non-partisan NHLA issues an annual Congressional scorecard ranking members of Congress on votes taken in the House and Senate which affect the quality of life of nearly 40 million members of the Hispanic community. The scorecard evaluated votes on legislation dealing with key issues, such as civil rights, education, economic mobility, and health care.
