In January 2001, Vanessa Nevarez, 18 years old, single mother of two, decided that it was time to do something with her life. At the Sobrato CET in September 2001, Vanessa completed her Medical Assisting program and was hired at Clinica Salud in Salinas. It was Vanessa's own determination, will, and the hope for a better future for her family that enabled her to be where she is right now: a certified Medical Assistant, a high school graduate, and a dedicated mother of three.

Josie Mendez-Negrete, San Jose, California
In the early seventies, Josie Mendez-Negrete was a single parent on welfare with little hope of a prosperous future. Today she is a prominent professor in San Antonio, Texas, teaching Bilingual Bicultural Studies. Dr. Mendez-Negrete has recently written an impressive book, titled "Las Hijas De Juan" (The Daughters of Juan).

Wilheminia Woods, Raleigh, North Carolina
Wilheminia Woods knew she could do so much more with her life than selling products and standing on production lines. She started her Medical Administrative Assistant program in October of 1999, set her goal to have employment and a path to a career by the spring of 2000. She now works at the Debnam Clinic in Raleigh as the Front Office Supervisor.

Elena Hernandez parents were migrant farm workers migrating back and forth to Mexico following the harvest. In 1986 she enrolled at CET in Salinas in the Automated Office Skills Program. CET opened the doors for her. She is now employed at the California Rural Legal Assistance Corporation, doing something she has always wanted to do, helping people, especially those in need.

Alcides Martinez, San Jose, California
Alcides Martinez was born in El Salvador, Central America. His parents were farm workers in El Salvador. He heard about CET from people at night schools that he attended. After graduating from the CET Computerized Accounting Skill program. He applied for an accounting position and got a job at the Mexican American Community Service Agency (MACSA).
