CET Announces Women's Scholarship

In an ongoing effort to embrace the private sector support CET receives, CET has established this scholarship to focus on the needs of our female students. "Currently, CET turns away many potential students, due to lack of tuition funds (loans, scholarships, grants, etc.) we are able to provide." explained Hermelinda Sapien, CET's Executive Director. "This scholarship fund is critical to provide the tuition for women seeking CET's assistance in changing their lives." The seed funds for this scholarship were provided by the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE). FWE's mission is to accelerate women's opportunities to start, manage and invest in market-leading companies. Susan Hailey, FWE's CEO said that "We are pleased to provide these funds to CET, as we know their training program offers constructive support and training to women in need—FWE strives to encourage and facilitate entrepreneurialism for women from all walks of life." See www.fwe.org.

The Women's Scholarship funding goal is $30,000, which will be awarded several times per year to several female CET students to attend job-skills training, in preparation for new careers. The Scholarship Advisory Board will make the awards based on need and a demonstrated desire to complete a skills-training program, (which averages 28 weeks). Karae Lisle, Chair for the CET Scholarships Program said, "The current average wage for a person just entering CET is $7,932; upon completion and job placement, we see that wage increase to $24,978 (which includes an estimated. 20% benefits). The success this fact represents is that in many cases, CET graduates can terminate public assistance such as welfare and food stamps, to become an independent, self-sufficient member of their community, which benefits society as a whole. Training is the beginning of an uplifting journey for economically disadvantaged people, and without tuition assistance, many people can not make the changes in their lives they so desperately desire. CET is counting on the private sector to provide funding support for many scholarships that we will establish in the 2003-2004 fiscal year."
