CET San Jose Career Center Gets a Technology Upgrade thanks to Hewlett Packard

The CET Sobrato Career Center in San Jose, CA recently celebrated their newly upgraded computer technology—thanks to a recent grant from Hewlett Packard. Now, a total of 14 computers provide CET students the opportunity to search and apply for jobs online, as well as send and receive emails.

The Career Center, managed by Ms. Rose Salazar is a tremendous resource for CET students: when a student has completed approximately 50% of their training program, they are eligible and in fact, encouraged to begin using the Career Center. The following services are offered:

  • Learn How to create a Resume, Reference, Cover Letter and Fact Sheet
  • Learn How to Search for a Job—Online and Newspaper
  • Learn How to Apply for a Job—Practice a Job Application
  • Learn How to Interview for a Job—Mock Interviews

Mr. Tony Alanis, a long time Manager at CET explained, "We are grateful to HP for their donation—the Career Center is a place for students to get the support they need for job placement: after the students create their resume and learn how to perform a job search, Ms. Salazar works with them to make sure they are taking the right steps. Each student is required to submit a weekly activity report to Rose, and from the reported information, she will often times make a follow-up phone call to an employer, helping to secure an interview for a student who has applied for an open job.

"As one of several Industry Development professionals that works on behalf of all CET students, our role is to stay connected with industry to ensure they know about our students, present job openings to us, and provide feedback regarding students' progress after they are hired", explained Ms. Salazar. "The Industrial Advisory Board is a formal way of building relationships with these companies/employers to ensure that the 'job ready students' we deliver, meet their staffing needs. We continually reach out to the community by attending Chamber of Commerce meetings and other activities in the private sector."

The Career Center is a tremendous resource for students, complementing their CET job skills training programs.
