EL GIGANTE AWAKENS

FILM ON HISTORIC 2006 IMMIGRANT MARCH PREMIERES IN JUNE

The much awaited film documentary of San Jose’s historical massive May 1, 2006 immigrants rights march was released recently on Cinco de Mayo. The film, titled El Gigante Awakens is the latest work by local veteran theatre artist and filmmaker Adrian Tepehua Vargas. Produced by Casa Vargas Productions in association with MiO Productions, the film is meant to be a tribute to all those that marched that day for social justice.

The 50 minute film is illustrative of the national events that took place on May 1, 2006, with the largest mobilization of street demonstrations in the history of the United States. The film speaks to the issue of the rights of immigrants (primarily Latino) through their own perspective and eyes.

The film focuses on the particular march/demonstration which occurred in San Jose, California. Through varied broad and spectacular visual images of the march and its spirited participants, along with interviews, music, and photography, the energy, spirit and hopes of the people is artfully captured in its dramatically historic essence.

The DVD version of the film may now be obtained in San Jose at the Pagesincolor.com fair trade crafts store located at 888 East Santa Clara Street. This unique arts and crafts shop is also the authorized dealer for T-shirts, buttons, and other crafts from the United Farm Workers’ Union.

The film also features spectacular photography by Rosario Vital, Elena Robles, Sharat G. Lin, Jesus Flores, Mario Ayala and Jesus M. Mena Garza.

There will be public premiere showings of El Gigante Awakens on June 22, 23, and 24, 2007, at the Antonio Soto Theater located at Center for Employment Training located at 701 Vine Street in downtown San Jose.
